This page covers how tempmail.jp temporary email service works, how to use it, security, storage period, and more. Content covers general users to web engineers, app developers, and testers who want to master temporary email.

About the Service (Overview, Features, Differences from Other Services)

What is a temporary/disposable email address?

A temporary or disposable email address is an email address that can be used for a certain period and then discarded. With tempmail.jp, simply visiting the site in your browser generates a random mailbox ID, and a temporary email address in the format xxxxxx@tempmail.jp is automatically assigned. It is specialized for receiving emails and requires no personal information such as registration, real name, or phone number.

Why do many people use temporary email (disposable mail)?

Temporary email is often used in "situations where you don't want to expose your real email address too much." For example:

  • Overseas services you just want to try
  • Sites with unclear trustworthiness
  • Forms where entering an email might result in a flood of advertising emails

If you register your main email address, you may receive a lot of spam, or notifications may continue arriving for a long time. Using temporary email avoids these problems and lets you test services without lasting consequences.

What are the features of tempmail.jp?

tempmail.jp is a temporary email reception service that emphasizes simplicity and speed.

  • Minimal design - your temporary address is shown immediately after page load
  • Accessible anytime with a password (you can log in from any browser)
  • No forced ad clicks or unnecessary screen transitions that would compromise the user experience
  • Transparent operation with FAQ, how-to, overview, terms, privacy, and contact pages
Is it free? Will it become paid in the future?

Currently, tempmail.jp is completely free to use, with no registration fees or monthly charges. While operational costs for service continuity may be covered by advertising revenue, there are no plans to make it a service where payment is mandatory for basic functionality.

Can I use it from mobile/smartphone? Is it PC-only?

It is available from smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Simply open tempmail.jp in your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.) to use the temporary email address regardless of device or OS. However, extremely old browsers or environments with JavaScript disabled may not display correctly.

How to Use & Basic Specifications

What is the basic flow of usage?

The general usage flow is as follows:

  • 1. Visit tempmail.jp in your browser
  • 2. Copy the temporary email address shown at the top of the screen
  • 3. Paste that address into the email field of the service or form you want to try
  • 4. Wait a few seconds to a few dozen seconds, and the email appears in the inbox at the bottom
  • 5. Click on the email to view its contents
Tip: Be sure to save your password. Both the email address and password are required to access the same address again.
Does the email address change every time? Can I keep using the same address?

Yes, you can continue using the same address. tempmail.jp uses a password-based access system, so you can access the same mailbox from anywhere, regardless of browser cookies or device.

If you want to switch to a completely new address, use the "Create new email address" button on the screen.

How often are emails automatically updated? Is manual refresh needed?

The inbox automatically refreshes approximately every 5 seconds. Therefore, if you keep the screen open, new emails will appear in near real-time without any action required. If you want to refresh immediately, click the "Refresh" button to get the latest state instantly.

Can I receive emails with attachments?

Emails with attachments can be received, but depending on the file type, size, or sender specifications, they may not open correctly or download properly. Be especially careful with executable files (.exe, etc.) which may pose security risks.

Note: For receiving important files or files that need long-term storage, we strongly recommend using a regular email address instead of temporary email.
Are Japanese and HTML emails supported?

Japanese text emails and general HTML emails are supported, but some emails with client-specific decorations or scripts may display incorrectly. Emails that rely heavily on external image resources or stylesheets may also have layout issues due to sender-side changes.

Is there a sending function?

Currently, tempmail.jp is a receive-only temporary email service. To prevent misuse such as sending spam or impersonation, we do not provide functionality to send emails from temporary addresses to arbitrary recipients. There are no plans to open this feature to the general public in the future either.

Security, Privacy & Anonymity

Is tempmail.jp safe? Does it support HTTPS?

tempmail.jp supports HTTPS (TLS) encrypted communication, protecting data transmitted between your browser and our servers from being directly read by third parties. However, please note that email systems on the internet are inherently like postcards and not all routing is fully encrypted.

Important: For highly confidential information exchange, consider using encrypted email or PGP instead of temporary email.
How much anonymity is guaranteed? Are IP addresses stored?

Temporary email is a service that emphasizes "email address anonymity." With tempmail.jp, no real name, phone number, or address is required for registration—simply accessing the browser is enough.

However, as an internet service, minimal technical information such as IP addresses and User-Agent may be temporarily recorded on servers via access logs and error logs. This is the same as most web services. For privacy details, please see our Privacy Policy.

Can others see my emails?

As with all temporary email services, if someone knows both your "email address and password," they could potentially access the same inbox. tempmail.jp mitigates this by requiring both a random string address and a set password, making third-party access difficult.

Warning: This does not guarantee complete confidentiality. We strongly recommend not receiving information you cannot afford to be seen by third parties — such as real names, addresses, or credit card information — via temporary email.
Can I use it for important accounts (banks, main SNS)?

We do not recommend it. Registering important accounts that require password resets with a temporary email can lead to situations where you cannot access the mailbox later, or emails expire, making account recovery difficult. This is a common problem reported with overseas temporary email services as well.

For important accounts, always use a regular email address that you can manage long-term.

What about spam or dangerous links?

Even with temporary email, the safety of received emails is not guaranteed. Whether to open suspicious links or attachments is ultimately the user's own judgment. Rather than "temporary email is safe," think of it as "a shield to avoid exposing your real email address."

Tip: We recommend ignoring emails from clearly suspicious senders or titles without opening them.

Storage Period, Expiration & Data Deletion

How long are emails stored?

With tempmail.jp, emails you choose to save are retained for 30 days. Unsaved emails are automatically deleted 30 days after receipt. Regardless of save state, the cumulative received-count counter does not decrease.

  • Saved emails: Retained for 30 days (manually marked as saved)
  • Unsaved emails: Auto-deleted 30 days after receipt
  • Cumulative counter: Does not decrease after deletion (counts entire history)
Tip: Be sure to press the "Save" button for important emails to ensure 30-day retention. Unsaved emails are automatically deleted after 30 days and cannot be restored.
Can deleted emails or addresses be restored?

Once deleted, emails cannot be restored. We do not provide individual email recovery from backups due to the nature of temporary email services. Be sure to separately save important information or content you may need to refer to later via copy or screenshot.

Does the address itself have an expiration?

The email address itself can be accessed anytime as long as you know the password. However, addresses that have not received emails for more than 30 days may be deleted to reduce system load.

Tip: To maintain your address, receive at least one email within 30 days. Be sure to keep your password safe — both the email address and password are required to access the same address again.

Recommended Usage, Not Recommended Usage & Use Cases

Recommended usage for general users

Typical recommended uses for general users include:

  • "Trial registration" for services you're curious about but not sure you trust
  • Newsletter or campaign registrations that may not be easy to unsubscribe from
  • Situations where you need an email address only to receive a download link
  • Coupon receipt or pre-registration testing

Using temporary email for these purposes reduces the risk of your main email address being flooded with spam or receiving advertising emails for long periods.

Recommended usage for developers and testers

For developers and testers, temporary email is a very useful tool:

  • Testing "registration," "password reset," and "notification" emails in web apps
  • Form submission testing or checking email template display issues
  • Verifying how multilingual emails actually appear as real emails
  • Use as a destination for test deliveries from staging or local environments

Using your personal or work address during development can clutter your inbox with test emails. Temporary email isolates test mail in a separate box, cleanly separating it from production mail.

Usage examples to avoid (NG)

Despite being convenient, there are cases where temporary email is not suitable:

  • Account registration for financial services such as bank or securities accounts
  • Registration for main SNS accounts (X / Instagram / Facebook, etc.)
  • Services that require ID verification such as document upload
  • Subscription contracts or important notifications that assume long-term contact
Warning: Using temporary email for these purposes directly leads to trouble such as "cannot view emails" or "cannot reset password." Limit temporary email to test, trial, and short-term use only.
Can I use it for receiving authentication codes (one-time passwords)?

Technically, you can receive and use verification codes contained in emails. However, since temporary email deletes emails in a short period, it is not suitable for re-logging in later or checking codes again.

Some services also entirely block "disposable email domains," which can mean "authentication emails don't arrive at all." Use temporary email only in situations where "it's okay if authentication doesn't go through."

When Email Does Not Arrive / Display Issues

Emails don't arrive. What should I check?

If emails don't arrive, check the following points in order:

  • Whether extra spaces or line breaks are mixed in when copying the address
  • Whether the destination address is correct (watch for typos in similar character strings)
  • Whether the sender service blocks "temporary emails including tempmail.jp"
  • If only a few seconds have passed since sending, wait a while and click "Refresh" to reload
  • Even if the service displays "send complete," it may have failed internally

If a specific service simply won't deliver, it may be rejecting "all temporary email." In that case, you may have no choice but to use a regular email address.

The email body is blank. Is it broken?

For HTML format emails, external images or stylesheets may be blocked, or layouts dependent on JavaScript may cause display issues. If the sender's email client is Outlook or some proprietary service, the layout may break or appear blank.

Workaround: For important emails, we recommend checking in another regular email client like Gmail.
Display is broken on smartphone. Any workaround?

If the smartphone screen is extremely narrow or font auto-enlargement is enabled, the body may become difficult to read. Try your browser's "View desktop site" feature for a clearer layout. If still hard to read, copy the text into a notes app to read it.

Questions About Usage for Developers & Testers

Can I use it for email sending tests of web apps or custom services?

Yes, usage for testing purposes is welcome. Please use it to verify registration emails, password reset emails, notification emails, and how they actually appear. However, mass sending or test sending of advertising emails to unspecified recipients that constitutes spam may violate the terms of service.

Is there an API? I want to integrate it into automated tests

Yes, we provide an API. Please check the "API" menu on the top page for details.

For automated tests, you can also retrieve emails displayed on screen via browser-based E2E tests (Selenium / Playwright, etc.).

Can I use it for load testing or mass email sending tests?

Please refrain from using it for load testing purposes involving sending large amounts of emails at once. To ensure stable operation of the service, excessive load may result in temporary restrictions or access blocks. If you're planning large-scale tests, please contact us in advance via the contact page.
